Tell Your Local Government to Support “Legislating the BC Coastal Marine Strategy” at the 2025 UBCM Convention

In 2024, the BC government released its first-ever Coastal Marine Strategy – a critical step in restoring and protecting our coast. This strategy lays out a bold, 20-year vision to:

  • Boost marine biodiversity
  • Combat pollution
  • Restore nearshore habitats
  • Prepare for the impacts of climate change
  • Support healthy coastal communities and economies

These goals are critical to local communities, which is why the municipalities of Saanich and Langford voted in favour of legislating the Coastal Marine Strategy, followed by the 54 local governments that comprise the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities.

On September 22nd-26th, mayors, municipal councillors, and other local government officials will meet at the annual Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Convention to consider key policy issues – including whether to urge the Province to legislate the Coastal Marine Strategy.

A strategy alone isn’t enough

Without legislation to support it, the Coastal Marine Strategy is at risk of becoming yet another well-intentioned plan that never reaches its full potential.
